Where to Buy Groceries Near Stratton Mountain: A Stock-the-Cabin Guide

One of the first questions any group trip organizer asks: where do we get food? The Stratton area isn't Manhattan. You won't find a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe's. But you won't starve either -- and with a little planning, you can stock a full cabin kitchen without a two-hour detour.

Here's what's actually available, how far it is, and what to grab where.

Price Chopper in Manchester Center -- Your Main Stop

This is the closest full-service grocery store to Stratton, about 25 minutes down Route 30. It's a real supermarket -- produce, meat counter, deli, bakery, decent wine selection, and a full pharmacy. For a group of 10 or more, this is where you do your main shop.

Go on your arrival day before you head up the mountain. The store is open until 10pm most nights. Stock up on breakfast staples, lunch supplies, and two or three easy dinner ingredients. Your group will be tired from driving. A hot meal at the house beats waiting for a restaurant table.

Drive time from the Winhall/Stratton area: about 25 minutes each way.

Stratton Mountain Resort Village -- Convenience, Not Value

There's a small market at the resort base village. It carries basics: coffee, snacks, prepared sandwiches, beer, wine, and a rotating selection of grab-and-go items. It's fine for last-minute things -- a forgotten jar of peanut butter, extra coffee pods, that one thing nobody remembered to pack.

Don't plan your full shop here. Prices run high and selection is limited. Treat it like a hotel mini-mart, not a grocery store.

Winhall Country Store

Right in the village of Bondville, about 10 minutes from most Winhall rentals. It's a classic Vermont general store -- limited selection, but they carry milk, eggs, bread, some produce, and basic pantry staples. Great for a morning top-up without driving all the way to Manchester.

Their hours can be inconsistent in the off-season and on holidays. Worth a quick call ahead if you're counting on it being open.

What to Bring From Home

If you're driving from New York, Boston, or Connecticut, your best move is to do a partial shop before you leave. Here's what makes sense to bring from a bigger store:

  • Specialty items: specific spice blends, dietary staples, anything your group is particular about
  • Bulk snacks for the car and the mountain
  • Coffee -- good coffee is worth packing

What you can easily get in Manchester: fresh produce, meat, dairy, wine, beer, basic pantry items.

The Plan That Works

  1. Pack specialty items and snacks from home
  2. Stop at Price Chopper in Manchester on your arrival day
  3. Use the Winhall Country Store or resort market for fill-ins mid-trip
  4. Make one more Manchester run if you're staying a week

Budget about $40-60 per person for a 4-5 day group trip if you're cooking most meals in the house. The cabin at Far Away has a full kitchen -- two fridges, full oven range, and enough counter space for a real cook.
