Driving to Stratton Mountain: Routes, Traffic, and What to Expect in Winter

Most people driving to Stratton come from New York, Boston, or Connecticut. The logistics of the drive -- when to leave, which route, what to expect in winter weather -- are worth thinking through before you're in a car with 8 people on a Friday afternoon.

From New York City

The Route: I-87 north (the Thruway) to Exit 20, then Route 9N and Route 149 to Route 4 in Whitehall, then Route 30 north through Wells and Pawlet into Vermont. Total distance: about 220 miles. Total time in normal conditions: 3.5-4 hours.

Traffic pattern: Friday afternoon departures from the city are predictably bad. Leaving by 1pm or after 8pm reduces the pain significantly.

From Boston

The Route: I-90 west to I-91 north, then I-91 to Vermont Exit 2 (Brattleboro), then Route 30 north through Newfane and Townshend to Bondville. Total distance: about 150 miles. Total time: 2.5-3 hours.

Winter Driving: What to Know

All-wheel drive or snow tires: Driving mountain roads in January and February in a two-wheel-drive car without winter tires is genuinely dangerous after a snowstorm. If you're renting a vehicle, confirm it has AWD or snow tires.

Route 30 from Bondville to Stratton: The last 3-5 miles are a mountain road with a real grade. It gets plowed promptly after snowfall, but on an active snow day, traction matters.

When it snows during your drive: Check 511.vermont.gov for road conditions and plow status. Vermont's road crews are good -- major routes are plowed reliably -- but two-lane mountain roads can have brief windows of unplowed conditions during heavy snowfall.

Traffic on Peak Weekends

Presidents' Week and MLK weekend Sunday afternoon traffic is significant. Two strategies: leave Sunday by noon, or wait until 4pm and eat dinner in Manchester before driving home in lighter traffic.

Gas and Services

Fill up before getting on the mountain roads. Bondville has one gas station with limited hours; Manchester has full services. Don't rely on finding fuel at the resort or in the Winhall area.
